  1. This one is an unheralded masterpiece in my humble opinion- such a tender, sublime reading- Sinatra’s once in a lifetime ( several?) voice is so perfectly suited to these melancholy ballads because of the incredibly personal and emotional artistry he imparts to the lyric- Frank had ( and still has) no equal when it came to torch ballads ( and swing music too) – total mastery of his craft!

  2. Frank called three albums his "suicide albums:" ("No One Cares (1959 arranged by Gordon Jenkins), Where Are You (1957 arranged by Gordon Jenkins), Only The Lonely," 1958, arranged by Nelson Riddle and I would add "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning (1955, arranged by Nelson Riddle)" to those three, probably my favorites of his albums because they are so full of emotion and longing.) OUCH — they grab my heart right down to its bottom!

  3. This is the best version by Frank. The Nelson Riddle version is a bit faster paced, simlar, but not as poignant and melancholy as this one. A true master at his craft. I would consider this a lost classic from FS.

  4. There was a time, when I was young, that my friends and I made fun of their dad for listening to Sinatra. As I got older and could afford my own sound system, I explored all types of music. Much to my surprise, I found myself returning to Sinatra again and again. His impact on the American experience is hard to comprehend. Music- a legendary recording catalog containing countless classics. Film- High Society, Guys And Dolls (It doesn't get any better). Vegas. The Rat Pack…His influence on popular culture was unprecedented. He was bigger than anyone before or since. With so many recordings of so many quintessential classics it's near impossible to define any one recording as a favorite, but, this has to be near the top of my list of favorites. This is magic.

  5. This is SO magnificent. I have the CD. It’s all the more poignant, knowing about Ava leaving him. Nancy played it on Seriously Sinatra Christmas Eve Eve, and said “This was such a sad period in Dad’s life”. Thank you for posting. This is the greatest singer , other than Bocelli, who ever walked this earth. Frank, I met you personally, five times. You even used our car in Chicago for the Villa Scalabrini Orphanage Benefit, which you did for free. There never has been, and never will be, another singer like you. Thank you for the music, which lives on, and thank you for the memories…..

  6. I love this melodic but kind of sad song — it's probably what Sinatra would have told the bull-fighter who took away Ava from him! I have it on the "No One Cares album.  Thanks for posting this so I don't have to pull it up on my own album!  Like always, his phrasing is so impeccable. (This is probably my favorite revenge song as I certainly relate to it!)

  7. Bob Dylan sang this song in concert yesterday at the Chateau Amphitheatre Washington State. He's recorded quite a number of "Sinatra" songs and other standards on his last two albums, but no recording has been released thus far of this one.

  8. FS's most heartbreaking track, because three days earlier he had slashed
his wrists over the break up of his corrosive marriage to Ava Gardner. According to James Kaplan who has written the definitive books on Frank,
he would have bled to death if Jimmy Van Heusen hadn't decided to visit
to pay a random visit. It is astonishing to think he managed
to record this sorrowful track, after such a truly terrible incident with such heartfelt beauty.

It is no error that it finally appeared on the darkest collection of torch songs ever to be recorded, "No One Cares" known as The Suicide Album.

  9. I called in to legendary Philadelphia DJ Sid Mark on his Friday with Frank show and told him this was one of my very favorite Sinatra recordings and he said  it was a favorite of his too. It is beautiful.

  10. Hello again Catman 916! This song from Mr. Sinatra, "I Could Have Told You" is simply beautiful. I discovered it only about a week ago and immediately fell in love with it.
It is a haunting refrain! As usual Frank makes it sound as though he is talking about himself and by extension you and me. This quality of singing was part of his musical genius. Thanks for posting it. It is now at the top of my iPhone YouTube favorites list.

  11. A singer of this talent comes along once in a lifetime (if a lifetime is 500 years). We'll never be able to repay Frank for what he gave us.
